It must feel great to be dating your bestfriend! Afterall, he/she knows everything about you, accepts you as you are. You feel safe, you can be vulnerable and he/she is always there. Sounds about PERFECT! Yet, the horror stories of how you could potentially lose this bestfriend forever scare you. You wonder, "is it worth the risk?"

You have to evaluate your situation on its own.

It's different from everyone else. Start every relationship on a good and happy note, believing you wouldn't lose him.

Minus The Bestfriend Factor
Don't be sidetracked by the fact that he is your bestfriend. Think the important stuff! Are your values aligned? Can you get along with his family and friends? If attraction matters to you, are you attracted to his physical appearance? Those matters more than just the 'bestfriend' factor.

The Initial Butterflies Don't Matter
Don't think that you're losing out on the so-called honeymoon period, giggly romantic stuff. Instead, you benefit from the 'fast-forward' button of knowing that you have his acceptance, you know his flaws and 'insider jokes'. When it's the right person, it feels like even that stars are aligned. Who knows, you might be proposed to in a few months. So, let go of the need for butterflies even if it matters a lot to you.

The Age/Maturity
If you're in your early 20s or younger, you're cranky and hormones still VERY active, rethink this bestfriend-turned-boyfriend decision. The risk is HIGH. If you're already stable, journey through a fair share of woes and witnessed how synchronised you both are. The chances are, you might be in for the best intimacy possible.

The Risk
Some people described that such breakup feels like losing your boyfriend, bestfriend, confidant, security etc. all at once! The pain is unbearable and it's the WORST. But, think again, even if you date a new friend, he would someday be the above in a healthy relationship. Breakups are never easy to begin with. When you decide to be in love with anyone -bestfriend or not- you are in for the risk of a painful separation.

Some Positive Signs

  • Your friends suggested you both should try to date
  • Agreement on important issues
  • You guys tend to be a little touchy
  • A telepathic type of chemistry *goosebumps*
  • You look forward to his messages

Some Negative Signs

  • Your friends advised you 'No'
  • Frequent arguments/disagreements
  • Bad relationship track records
  • Ignoring/Silence Treatment
  • Low Tolerance of his imperfections

And if you realised you actually love your bestfriend, and the feeling is mutual. Take the bold step forward. Imagine this, if you missed the chance, he starts dating someone else and eventually draws the line with you for a new girl. You're in for the biggest regret of your life.Screen Shot 2018-07-19 at 9.32.17 PM

The voice of the negative is louder and it's true. The risk is amplified. More people are writing about how happy they are dating their bestfriend as compared to a significantly lesser minority who share their pain.

Think about what really matters between 2 people: the important values, synchronisation, chemistry. These are indifferent to whether he is your bestfriend or not. Good Luck!
